Exfoliation Basics – What You Need to Know

What does it mean to exfoliate?  It means removing dead skin cells from the surface of your skin. Our body does this naturally by pushing dead cells up to the surface while new fresh cells are created (cell turnover).  Skin will renew itself every 14 days, teenagers roughly 27 days, and adults’ range between 28 and 42 days.  Even though the rate at which our skin renews itself slows down considerably as we age,  there are ways to increase healthy cell turnover. We offer two:   A topical skin body polish, such as our Shine! CBD Body Scrub, and dry brushing, such as our Living More Dry Brush

Skin has several layers, the stratum corneum contains dead skin cells that used to exist in the epidermis.  Using scrubs and other skin products will remove or thin this layer.  The epidermis is the thinnest layer of your skin, but it's responsible for protecting you from the harsh environment.  Topical exfoliation uses motion to slough off dead skin on the stratum corneum with products like scrubs and cleansing brushes.  Chemical exfoliation uses acids or enzymes that break down and dissolve the dead skin.  Examples include chemical peels, fruit acids and enzymes.  This method helps to smooth skin by removing dead cells allowing skincare products to work more efficiently, stimulate collagen, and even out your skin’s tone and texture.

Another form of exfoliation is dry brushing.  According to the Wellness Mama,-- one of our favorite bloggers and Podcasters -- the process of running a firm, natural bristled brush over the skin helps loosen and remove dead skin cells, naturally exfoliating skin.  Wellness Mama provides some tips for selecting a dry brush including finding a brush with firm, natural bristles, like Madrigal Creatives Living More dry brush

It’s important to emphasize “gentle” when talking about exfoliation.  So many scrub routines are far too aggressive and will damage the epidermis.   When you buy CBD cosmetics like Shine! CBD Body Scrub, you will appreciate its gentle exfoliation through the use of ultra-fine walnut shell powder that works into a silky lather and delivers healing hemp concentrate, peppermint essential oils and fruit acids designed to help rebuild and support the skin’s outermost layer while renewing skin.  Using Shine! CBD Body Scrub-- combined with dry brushing -- brings  the added benefits of lymphatic drainage and pore cleansing.
